Instead of a taboo, it’s more of a constant factor. Pornography is everywhere in contemporary society, so it’s in art too. While the obscenity in pornographic art is still sometimes camouflaged to a certain extent by so-called emancipatory motives, most often everything is in full view, just like the porn that art bases itself upon. The question, therefore, is what does art have to gain by it all?
Known for his romantic films of homemade airplanes and automobiles in which he has travelled to the outermost borders of Europe, in his most recent work Joost Conijn reveals himself as a social commentator. This spring, the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum is presenting an overview of his entire oeuvre, including his newest work, Olland.

Today, there is great interest in the 1980s, in its music, fashion and art. As then, a flourishing alternative scene exists in which artists have taken initiative into their own hands and are active in small, temporary locations. Even in W139, now back on the Warmoesstraat, we see a revival of the mentality of ‘making and doing’ that gave the 1980s their colour. Tineke Reijnders sketches a comparison of then and now.
It is like being in a great web of images and texts, facts and thoughts. Pablo Pijnappel’s films and slide presentations are not easily disentangled. Each work is dedicated to a family member or friend. This way, the artist tries to come to terms with his own roots.
