Initiated by Klaus Bußmann and Kasper König in Münster in 1977, the Skulptur Projekte have developed to become one of the world’s most important exhibitions of art in the public space. Its history is closely linked to the idea of creating a public not only with but also for art. Its realization at generous ten-year intervals makes the exhibition not only a special event, but also a “long-term study” between the poles of art and the public sphere. Since its inception, the exhibition’s development has always been based on proposals for temporary projects in the urban space submitted by the artists invited to participate. The artistic director Kasper König and the two curators – Britta Peters, a free-lance curator from Hamburg, and Marianne Wagner, curator of contemporary art at the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur – have selected thirty-five artists and artist groups to realize their project proposals. Coming from nineteen different countries, the artists span a broad spectrum of origins and nationalities. They will create altogether thirty-five temporary artworks ranging from sculpture to performative art in the urban space.

The Skulptur Projekte is a cooperative project of Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) and the city of Münster. The LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur organizes the exhibition.
