After ampel consideration the jury has by unanimous decision rewarded Gilly van Zanten the Leoprijs 2019.

Van Zanten (1980, NL) graduated this year from the MFA in Utrecht after finishing his BA at AKV St. Joost in 2008. He convinced the jury with his multi-layered and experimental practice in which he demonstrates a great sensitivity for the relation between language, sound and objects.

For his residency at Leo XIII, Van Zanten proposed to work around questions of what he calls ‘a physical thinker point (objet trouvé)’ presented at an experimental stage within the space of Leo XIII. These will be combined with a soundscape that stems from improvised sound recording sessions with musicians and friends.

The jury is curious to see how these things might come together during his stay at the residency and also looks forward to seeing these ideas take shape in an ongoing dialogue with artist and writer Brenda Tempelaar.

The jury expects that the artist will be able to use the specific possibilities of the space at Leo XIII as well a the broader context of Tilburg as a city with a large variety of venues, especially for improvised music. The jury is looking forward to Gilly van Zanten’s work period that lasts from November 2019 till February 2020.

The jury is impressed about the number of applications and the high quality of it. Gastatelier Leo XIII thanks all artists for taking interest in Leo XIII and for submitting their work for this years edition.

A special thanks goes out to the jury:
Domeniek Ruyters, chief editor of Metropolis M
Maria Schnyder, curator at Museum De Pont, Tilburg
Brenda Tempelaar, artist, art-critic and -writer
